Reporting to: Publishing Manager

The Development Editor position is envisaged as a starter position for a graduate who has an interest in entering our evolving publishing profession. The successful candidate will gain experience in the necessary background research and support tasks that are undertaken in the commissioning and development of learning materials as used in the higher education sector and beyond.
The Development Editor will assist the publishing team by undertaking various preliminary and administrative tasks that need to be completed in the course of commissioning content, and in the content development process.

Minimum Qualifying Criteria
• Relevant degree, preferably post graduate
• Relevant experience in research
• Knowledge of the publishing industry
• Sound knowledge of the South African Higher Education system
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent customer service orientation; tenacity and follow-through
• Ability to take initiative, attention to detail, willing and able to trouble-shoot problems.
• Digital content development experience
• An understanding of the training landscape in South Africa and exposure to training programme development

Required skills
• Computer literacy and database skills: proven ability to work with databases and analyse and interpret data
• Research skills: logical thinking and analysis skills: ability to synthesise and interpret data, and compile comprehensive reports with necessary recommendations.
• Language proficiency and ability to draft own correspondence, excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
• To assist the publishers in market research for specific commissioning work
• Set up commissioning workshops and undertake administrative tasks relating to commissioning
• Commission and develop ancillary materials
• Obtain reviews and technical edits
• Coordinate and action the marketing plans as identified – book launches, conferences, collateral requirements etc)
• Assistance with publishing functions as per the book development requirements

Position: Publishing Editor (Journals)

Reporting to the publishing manager, the incumbent will project manage the publication of a group of journals, working with a team comprising copyeditors as well as layout and other production and support staff. The publishing team includes NISC staff, who work in-house or remotely, as well as freelance contractors. Title responsibilities will be informed by the subject area expertise, interests and experience of the incumbent.

Main responsibilities
• Ensuring timely production and publication of journals in both print and online formats that reflect the high production values that are the hallmark of the company.
• Representing your journals, as well as NISC and its publishing ethos, professionally and knowledgably to authors, editors and other stakeholders.
• Engaging with editors-in-chief to plan each volume of their journal so that appropriate content is published to the agreed schedule and standard.
• Communicating appropriately with authors during the publication process to meet expectations of a timely, quality published research output.
• Collaborating with the publishing manager to shape the NISC editorial style and refine production and publication processes so that NISC keeps pace with emerging trends in journal publishing.

• At least five year’s relevant work experience in the publishing sector. A post-graduate qualification and/or a background in scholarly research, academic editing and publishing and/or production would be strong recommendations.
• Demonstrable computer proficiency. A facility with industry standard layout software, particularly Adobe Creative Cloud, would be a strong recommendation.
• Excellent language skills and meticulous attention to detail. A passion for accuracy and clarity.
